The 12th Annual Scientific Meeting of Egyptian Hypertension Society

I was honored to be the president of the 12th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Egyptian Hypertension Society that was held at Cairo Fairmont Hotel in Heliopolis from 9th to 11th April 2008. The meeting was preceded by a one-day pre-conference meeting of the World Hypertension League.

The meeting was highly attended by both international and Arab faculty. International guest speakers were from USA, Canada, Sweden, England, Australia, India and China. Eminent Expertise from Arab Countries, particularly UAE, Morocco, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait participated in the scientific program.

The meeting focused on clinical hypertension and mainly issues of interest to medical practitioner in his daily practice, either in diagnosis or treatment of hypertension. This year for the first time in an Egyptian national meeting a competition was held in breakfast sessions between different universities in Egypt to select the clinical case of case of the year. One of the international guest faculty co-chained every one of these breakfast sessions. Dr. Kareem Said from Cairo University was awarded the prize for the best case.

Also, at the end of each scientific day, contest was held. Throughout each scientific day, contestants were selected from attendants. A series of multiple choice questions escalating in difficulty were directed to contestants. Audience were able to take active part in the contest through audience response system. Multiple choice questions were relevant to scientific topics of the day. Cash prizes were awarded to three of the contestants. The Egyptian Hypertension Society is encouraging this kind of fair and enjoyable competition that reinforces the scientific message of the meeting in a new format.

I would like to thank all my colleagues in the Egyptian Hypertension Society. Without their sincere help, the meeting would have never been possible.
