Projected New Cases of Diagnosed Diabetes in US Adults by Age Group
Based on data derived from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), the CDC estimated that in 2000, the largest number of new cases of diabetes would be seen in people between the ages of 45 and 64. The estimated number of new cases was  217,000 among 20 to 44 year-olds, 504,000 among 45 to 64 year-olds, and 316,000 among people 65 years old.
